What kind of apples are best to use?

Choose apples with tart-sweet notes to add a more complex flavor to the dish. Some suggestions include Honeycrisp (our choice), Haralson, Braeburn, Fuji, and Gala. You also want to make sure apples are firm so that your end result is baked apple slices, not baked applesauce.

Tools You’ll Need

  • Apple peeler (opt.) – Crank-style apple peeler that peels, cores, and slices apples. Not a must but SO handy in saving time. If you do a lot of apple baking, I would highly recommend investing in one.
  • 9×13″ Baking dish
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Measuring spoons

Ingredients

cinnamon baked apples ingredients

  • Apples – Any apples that are firm with tart-sweet flavor will work well. Apples may be completely peeled, or you can leave some of the peels on for added texture and nutrition. We use our handy apple peeler to slice and core apples, which also removes all the skin.
  • Lemon juice – Brightens the flavor and helps apples from browning before going in the oven.
  • Brown sugar – Can also be substituted 1:1 with honey or maple syrup. Depending on the sweetness of your apples and personal preference, sugar can be reduced by 1-2 T.
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Ground ginger
  • Nutmeg
  • Cornstarch – Thickening agent that turns the apple juices into a beautiful sauce that coats the apples.
  • Water – Helps the apples from becoming too dry in the oven. You can also substitute apple juice for more flavor if you have it on hand.
  • Salt

Directions

Step 1:
Slice and peel apples. Add apples to a large mixing bowl and top with remaining ingredients; gently stir to coat.

You can skip the bowl and mix directly in the 9×13″ dish if you want to cut down on dishes. However, I find that mixing in a bowl allows that spices and cornstarch to coat apples more evenly.

Step 2:
Pour mixed apples into a greased 9×13″ baking dish.
Cover with foil and bake at 350º for 45 minutes.

Step 3:
Remove foil and bake an additional 10-15 minutes until apples are fork-tender.
Gently stir apples in dish to coat evenly in the sauce.
